I decided to update my business cards from last year to better fit my current work and to be more professional. My old business cards were primarily made to be given out at conventions to direct people to my social medias, and as such didn't have an email or portfolio site written on them. With these new business cards I have made sure to include relevant professional information as well as social media names to better suit my presence as a practitioner.

Scan the Horizon

Where I would like to work (Short term and Long term)

- Short term I plan to work a temporary full-time job in order to build up savings for a minimum of a year. I plan to do some freelance work on the side to continue building my portfolio while I’m taking a year out of the industry.
- Long term I plan to work within a studio or corporation to hopefully have more consistent work and stable income.

What do I know about my dream role?

- I would ultimately like to find a job within pre production, preferably character design as it is the area of animation I find the most enjoyable. Though I feel that my skills in that area are strong, I still believe that I have a lot to learn and that I can improve further. I would also like to understand how character design works in the industry, so I want to focus on finding contacts in this area to help me further develop my skills and understanding.

Who do I know what might help me get my foot in the door?

- After tabling at a convention last year, I made some good contacts with other artist tabling there. However, I would also like to make some more connections based in the industry as I feel that these are lacking. As such I think it’s important to continue to attend networking events and other animation festivals to try and make these contacts.

Networking opportunities based on where I want to work?

- I hope that I will be able to continue to attend local festivals and continue to improve my networking skills. However, I also intend to keep an eye out for other events in Leeds and York that could be beneficial to my career or could help create contacts.

Anything else that is related to me moving in from LAU?

- After graduating I will be moving back to my parents for at least a year in order to build up funds and develop my skills further. I also hope to do some freelance work on the side to build up a portfolio. After that year I will hopefully be in a position to move out and begin looking for work within the industry.

Promare

Recently I managed to attend a limited screening of Studio Triggers latest anime film Promare.

Promare is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima. It blends 2D and 3D animation to create one of the most visually stunning pieces of animation I ever watched.

When watching this film the character designs and use of coloured line really stood out to me. The two protagonists, Lio and Galo, contrast each other well in both their colour pallets and builds, which creates a beautiful blend when the two are stood next to each other. I also love the use of colour for the shading of characters, particularly with Lio as he has a naturally darker colour pallet.

When the environment becomes darker the use of coloured lie really stands out and draws your attention to the characters. This is enhanced further by the use of vivid and intense colours typically used for the fire in the film.

After seeing this film, I really want to try experimenting with harsher colour pallets that make things stand out, as well as making better use of coloured line. I feel that this has really encouraged me to try new things with my character design skills to further myself as a practitioner.

Character Design Workshop: Seb Burnett

During MAF I decided to attend a character design workshop hosted by Seb Burnett, an illustrator and character designer. I thought that this could be a useful opportunity to gain insight into the character design industry and get advice from a professional within it. The session itself was a lot of fun and I took a lot of useful notes:

- Create a studio or collective, it helps build your network and people start taking you seriously
- Learn to bend styles for customer needs
- A lot of your ideas wont get used so get used to it but don't let it stop you
- Initially get as many ideas down as you can
- If you can re-use things, do it. It will help to cut down time.
- A lot more funding for games at the moment
- Do your research
- Use Extremes
- Manchester is good for TV
- Figure out a lie your character believes

During the session we also got to create a character based on prompts which was a really fun experience. It made me really focus on figuring out how to portray the important aspects of a character visually. We were even given the opportunity to critique a character Seb created with us which was a useful experience as it showed us how he made improvements based on our suggestions.

I feel that this was a really useful workshop to attend to further my ability as a character designer and i'm glad I spent the extra money to attend.

Manchester Animation Festival

This year I was lucky enough to be able to attend MAF with the university. I felt it was important for me to attend this event in my final year as it would be my last year to attend as part of the university, and opportunity to get better insight into the industry. Here is an overview of some of the things I attended:

Golden Wolf Talk:
I had a lot of fun watching this presentation. Golden wolf have some really fantastic animation and seem like a fun company to work with. I found their talk about how they get started in the industry really inspirational and insightful. Some notes I took during the presentation:

- The best way to predict the future is to make it!
- Don't settle for ok
- Social media is very important, make things bite sized if you can
- Short form content is emotive
- Stay visible, focused, and consistent
- Collaborate!

Animated Answers:
This was a really interesting talk to get insight into the industry and the speakers had really good energy. Some notes:

- Show that you are a hard worker and you will be given chances, build trust!
- Let then know what you want to do and show what you can do
- Be professional when receiving feedback, don't be arrogant
- Designing skills give you an advantage
- Put what you like in your showreel rather then whats good but you don't like.
- Trust yourself

Notthingham Comic Con

Me and Hannah were able to attend Nottingham comic con this year as vendors which was a really amazing experience. We got to meet a lot of independent artists and interact with customers in a new way. We even met a few people who recognised our work from social media which was a real confidence boost.

This was a really valuable experience for me as I needed to push to put my work out there and knowing that people will actually buy my art has really helped my confidence as an artist.

We also got the chance to spend the evening with some of our artist friends who live a bit further off (some of which we had never met before) and get a meal with them. This was very refreshing and a lot of fun to be able to hang out and chat with other creatives in a relaxed environment.

Overall this was an invaluable experience and I will definitely try to attend more conventions like this in the future.

Showreel 2018/2019

Loop De Loop

For this Months Loop De Loop competition I chose to submit my own short looping animation. I chose this competition as I felt it would help improve my general 2D animation skills, as well as challenge me to make a short looping animation within a time limit.

This months theme was 'Pig' so I chose to create something based on the idea of pigs in blankets. This video shows my final product that I submitted to the competition.

I feel that this experience has been very useful in improving my professional development due to the time management aspect and having to submit within the limit.

Merge Studios (Social Media)

For my teams presentation on our studio/collective I was put in charge of looking into the social media aspects of the project. This involved the kind of social media platforms our studio would be involve in as well as the kind of visuals we would use.

As seen in the slides, we decided on using our own website, twitter, facebook, instagram, and Linkdin. (reasonings listed in first slide)

For the design of the website, I created a rough outline showcasing the basics.  It would be simple and clean but stylised, easy to navigate, and allows viewers can click to view individual profiles or look at group work. It would also include links to our social media and contact details.

I also created a rough idea of what our Twitter would look like (other platforms would have a similar use of visuals). It would have a similar theme to the website and would stick to the brand colour scheme. It would also include a link to website and have each of the teams individual profiles in the 'who to follow' section.

Creating Business Cards

I chose to make business cards this year in order to further my professional development. These business cards are specifically designed for use at conventions (or public) to promote my social media (specifically instagram) rather then encourage business emails.

I plan to create a separate set of cards that are specifically for a more professional environment that will include links to my website, social media and business email. I felt that this system of having two kinds of cards would work best for me and the different settings in which I wanted to promote myself

Applying for a Convention

Having decided to work on furthering my professional career as an independent artist, Me and a friend have decided to sign up for a convention (which we have been accepted for) in October. This means we will share a table where we can sell our work and promote our business.

This is an exciting opportunity as I have never done a convention before as it is a fair bit out of my comfort zone. However, I decided it would be a good experience as it would encourage me to interact with other professionals and show off my work to be sold.

Applying for Zines

In order to further my professional development I have applied to be considered for a couple of zines (with another one opening applications soon which I will also apply for). Zines are a good opportunity for me to get my professional name out there and encourage a bigger following. It also helps me better my professional work and learn to communicate with others about the zine and work to a set deadline. Zines also require regular updates so It means I have to be consistent with my work and communication.

This is also a good opportunity as at least of of the zines I would receive payment for working in (if selected) and another is an original character zine, which allows me to further my interests in character design by creating more of my own characters to be shared with an audience.

Creating a Professional Email

I decided to create a professional/business email that is separate from the email I used everyday. I chose to do this in order to simplify how my emails are organised so now I know my usual one will be used for personal things, while my business one will be for work and networking.

I chose to use my online artist name 'ElAnimated' for this email as it meant it was easy for people to remember and would fit in with my current professional social medias. I have already replaced the emails for these accounts (such as instagram and twitter) with this new email and have been using it when making work/professional based emails.

Social Media Pro

Current Social Media

Instagram
Personal account and portfolio/business account. Used for keeping up with other artists and sharing my work. Probably the account I post my work on most frequently. However, I should defiantly be posting on this more as currently I post maybe once every two weeks. This is probably the account I should be focusing on the most and using to promote myself from an artist standpoint.
Twitter
Personal account. Sometimes has work or works in progress posted on it but is usually used for communicating with friends/artists and keeping up with the news. Also has an art account for it but is very inactive. This is also a really good platform for promoting myself and that I defiantly should be taking advantage of better.
Facebook
Personal only. Work isn't posted here as it is used for communicating with friends/family. Privacy settings are high so there is little point in using it to promote myself. However, this account is in multiple art groups such as the character design challenge.
Tumblr
Personal account. Work is rarely ever posted here (especially since the new change in regulations) as its not where I want to be targeting an audience. Can be good for getting involved with projects and communicating with artists however.
Linkedin
Business account. Rarely used but is there to make connections and look at potential employers/businesses. I should however be posting on this more frequently and sharing my work/skills.
Discord
Personal account. Used for talking with friends mostly but is also involved with an art discussion group. Useful for communication but not promoting work as it is closed groups. Good for communicating with other artists if used correctly.
Snapchat
Personal only. Used for communicating with friends and is not useful in promoting myself.
Wixsite
Used as a portfolio site. Has examples of my best/favourite work as well as contact details. I need to get better at updating this and making it more interesting as it is still very simple.

Short List

Instagram
Focus on this platform more and try becoming more frequent with posting on the main account. Keep business/portfolio account for best work and post more generic work on main account. Aim to post at minimum once a week but once a day or once every other day would be optimum. Also start using instagram story more to better communicate with followers and post smaller updates.
Twitter
Also try to use this more frequently. Really good for communicating with followers, sharing work and giving smaller/more frequent updates. Focus on posting works in progress and communicating with other artists. Also, try and look out for more collaborative opportunities as this platform is really good for that.
Linkedin
Try and post more and find more connections. Doesn't have to be as frequent as other platforms but should still be kept up to date.
Wixsite
Keep it clean. Show only the best work but also make sure it's up to date and is interesting.

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse is the latest instalment in the Spider-Man franchise featuring a new hero, Miles Morales.

Into the Spider-Verse is the first animated Spider-Man film created by Sony Animation using a brand new animation software created by Sony, and has received high praise from both critics and audiences.

The film features multiple characters from the Spider-Man universe such as Miles Morales, Peter B Parker and Gwen Stacey. Each character has their own unique style which matches the medium they are originally from. For example Peni Parker has a more anime inspired style while Spider-Ham has a more cartoon like style.

The way character and objects are textured is also unqiue to this animation style as it incorporates comic art styles with 3D animation to create an entirely new look.

CopyShop

Looking at my online presence, I have actually done very little to protect my copyright. I rarely watermark my work and have never mentioned creative commons or copyright in my bio, to inform my audience how they can use my work.

Moving forward, I have placed banners and creative commons abbreviations on my social media platforms to let my audience know what they are allowed to do with my work. I will also start thinking about placing a watermark or signature on my work to better protect it.

Detective Pikachu

Detective Pikachu is an upcoming live action film based on the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. The narrative takes place in the Pokemon universe where Tim Goodman (a failed Pokemon trainer) who meets Detective Pikachu and tries to uncover the mystery of his fathers disappearance.

The films trailer has received a lot of controversy over the designs of the Pokemon, and how they have been translated into a more realistic style. Many feel that the realistic style makes certain Pokemon appear rather disturbing or ugly and some just dislike the style completely.

I personally feel that the designs are interesting and represent what Pokemon would look like in a more realistic landscape. Characters such as Pikachu and Bulbasaur have designs that represent that creature/plant life they are based on in a more cute style. Whereas Pokemon such as Mr. Mime who are criticised for being 'ugly' are designed in such a way that is creepy but represents their original designs well.

K/DA

K/DA is a fictional pop group with real life counter parts created to promote new content for the game League of Legends. These characters all have their own unique style and designs to match their personalities as well as in game abilities.

The promotional music video went viral due to its unique style and characters it presented. The character Akali (see image on left) in particular grew in popularity due its interesting fluorescent look, mixed in with the use of graffiti and movements to enhance their rapper style.

Each character has their own race/class within the League of Legends world to create further diversity, for example, Ahri is inspired by nine tailed foxes from asian mythology while Evelynn's design is based on sirens and succubus'.

Their real life counterparts also match their diversity with half the group being Korean and the other half being American.

Inazuma Eleven Orion No Kokuin

Inazuma Eleven Orion No Kokuin is the sequel to the series Inazuma Eleven Ares No Tenbin, a reboot of the original Inazuma Eleven series. This TV anime series revives the original series with a fresh new style, set of character and narratives while still staying true to the feel of the originals.

The series while having a new cast of characters still mixes in some of the old favourites, such as the original protagonist Endou Mamoru, who plays a main role in the new narrative. However, the main protagonist of the Ares series, Inamori Asuto, continues to act as the protagonist of this series.

New character designs also play a large role in this series, as it is a reboot it required a fresh feel. Characters now have more realistic proportions, with longer bodies and more details in the clothing they wear. Some characters skin tones have also changed, such as Endou having a lighter skin tone and characters such as Someoka have darker skin tones. Line styles are another big change introduced in Ares as designs in the past were a lot sharper and pointed while new designs are smoother and more rounded.
